This elderflower martini is a refreshing combination of elderflower liqueur, vodka, and lime, with a garnish of fresh mint.
The elderflower martini is a wonderfully refreshing cocktail, perfect for spring and summer. The combination of the flavors of the elderflower liqueur and the fresh squeezed lime juice along with the hint of mint is both fruity and floral.
The first time I tried this martini was years ago in a bar in Toronto, Canada, while we were on vacation. I wish I could remember the bar but I have not been very good at documenting vacations (I really need to keep a travelogue just so that I can remember the details of the trip).
I do know that we had a great time there and ate some pretty fabulous food. Plus, the people were incredible. We also made the day trip to Niagara Falls. Very touristy. Very fun.
I played around with the ingredients listed on the menu of that bar, and this ratio came closest to the flavors of the cocktail we enjoyed on vacation.
Ingredients in the Elderflower Martini:
Elderflower Liqueur: There are several brands. I used St. Germain, which is made in France. It's hard to describe. It's flowery, sort of like lavender, but not. It's flowery, but not overly so, with a fruity flavor. Unlike a lot of liqueurs, it's not too sweet. It's actually lovely straight up as a digestiv.
Evidently the starry white elderflowers are harvested by hand in the morning during a two-week period in late spring to make this liqueur.
If you buy a bottle, you can also use it to make a spritzer, add it to a gin and tonic, or make a margarita.
Vodka: I used plain vodka for this cocktail, but pear flavored vodka would also be delicious.
Lime Juice: You will need a tablespoon.
We have a very prolific lime tree that produces more than we can use during the winter and early spring. We give away a ton of limes but we also squeeze and freeze a lot of the juice in small jars for later. All you'll need is a tablespoon of lime juice.
Fresh Mint: Just a sprig for garnish.
This cocktail is very refreshing, and not too girlie. If you try it, it might just become part of your Friday night cocktail rotation.
Elderflower Martini Variations:
You could use gin instead of the vodka for an even more complex combination of flavors.
If you'd like a sweeter version, you could add a teaspoon of simple syrup.
When it's really hot out, you can serve this cocktail over ice.
