Garlic and Sea Salt Pita Chips

These garlic and sea salt pita chips are an easy and delicious appetizer.

These garlic and sea salt pita chips are a happy result of my pita bread experiment. After baking a batch of pita bread, I had several left over that were beginning to get stale. 

I posted a photo of some of the ugliest misshapen versions of the pitas on Instagram, and my nephew suggested pita chips. Oh yeah.

The best part of these chips? Besides being delicious, they're baked! No deep frying involved. Plus garlic! I love, love, love garlic. 

These pita chips are so crunchy savory good. I couldn't stop eating them. Fortunately, my son dropped by and took them off of my hands. I was kind of out of control.

What You Will Need to Make These Pita Chips:

Olive oil, for brushing the pitas.

Minced garlic cloves, for infusing the olive oil. 

Freshly ground black pepper for infusing the oil.

Course sea salt or kosher salt. 

Four pita breads, separated into two rounds each. You can use homemade or store bought pita bread.

How to Make These Pita Chips:

First, combine the olive oil, minced garlic, and black pepper and let sit for half an hour to infuse the olive oil. 

Meanwhile, heat your oven to 375 degrees F and brush the pita rounds with the infused oil when the oil is ready. Next, cut the rounds into eight triangles and place them on a half sheet pan in a single layer and sprinkle them with sea salt. 

After that, bake them in the oven for 10 minutes, turn them over, and bake them for an additional 15 or so minutes, until crispy. 

Finally, turn them out onto paper towels to let them cool.

These garlicky pita chips will be your new favorite snack. 

If you haven't devoured them all, you can store these pita chips at room temperature in an airtight container. 

P.S. If you're interested in making your own pita bread, I have two recipes, one for spelt pita bread, and one for pita bread with whole wheat flour. 

It's really fun watching the rounds puff up and separate through your oven window. It's a lot like watching macaron cookies develop "feet" while baking in the oven. There's both tension and joy!

Garlic and Sea Salt Pita Chips

These garlic and sea salt pita chips are an easy and delicious appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 6 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 pita breads, split in half so that you have eight rounds
  • Coarse sea salt or Kosher salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Stir together the olive oil, garlic, and pepper and allow it to sit for about 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  3. Brush the pita rounds on both sides with the infused olive oil and then cut the breads into eight triangles with a pizza cutter or a sharp knife.
  4. Arranged the triangles on a baking sheet and sprinkle them lightly with your fingers with the sea salt or kosher salt.
  5. Bake the pita triangles for 10 minutes and then flip them over with a spatula.
  6. Bake until crispy, about another 10 to 20 minutes, depending on their thickness.
  7. Cool the chips on paper towels. Once they are cooled, place them in an air tight container.
