I'm a huge fan of The Kitchen on Food Network, and it's a part of my Sunday morning routine. First, CBS Sunday Morning (brain food, and one of the best secrets on television), and then The Kitchen.
As part of the show, Geoffrey Zakarian usually prepares a cocktail, and this one totally caught my eye.
He made a big deal about pouring the cocktail into a Nick and Nora glass, as in Nick and Nora Charles from The Thin Man. Nick and Nora are a married couple who exchange witty repartee while solving mysteries. Evidently he is an alcoholic and she is an heiress. I guess his drinking didn't get in the way of their ability to solve murder mysteries.
My first exposure to Nick and Nora? For years I was obsessed with the Los Angeles Times Sunday Crossword Puzzle, authored by Sylvia Bursztyn. I would take all Sunday working on the puzzle until I could solve it. If I couldn't finish it, I'd save it until the following Sunday to check my answers against "last week's puzzle."
Back to Nick and Nora: It seemed like every week, one of the clues was "Nick and Nora's dog," whose name was Asta. So miss your puzzles Sylvia!
The Spring Fling Cocktail is so refreshing. It's a wonderful blend of gin, citrus juices, and Chartreuse, garnished with a grapefruit peel twist.
If you don't have a Nick and Nora glass, a red wine glass would work just fine! Heres' the story of my Nick and Nora glasses. You can also read more about Chartreuse, an ingredient in this cocktail.
For another great gin-based cocktail in a Nick and Nora glass, you need to try the fabulous Satan's Whiskers!
