Sangria is a great cocktail for summer entertaining, but it can also be wonderful as a winter cocktail too. It's easy to put together, and is perfect to make-ahead. Sangria is also lighter than a standard cocktail, like a European-style aperitif.
Sangria is also a great way to use inexpensive (but still good) wine in a cocktail, and it's totally customizable based on what fruit is in season.
If you're interested in a red wine sangria, be sure to try this orange pomegranate sangria.
How to make Sangria:
First, pick your fruit to use depending on the season. For winter sangria, citrus is perfect. In the fall, apples, pears, and pomegranates are wonderful. If it's summer, be sure to take advantage of all of the gorgeous stone fruit available. Slice the fruit and add it to a large pitcher.
Next, add wine, brandy or other liqueur, and possibly some fruit juice to the pitcher. In addition, add something fizzy, such as club soda, flavored soda water, or bubbly soda. Stir everything together, cover, and refrigerate to let the flavors meld.
Finally, fill large wine glasses with ice, drop in some of the fruit slices, and pour the sangria into the glasses. You can also add a floater of more soda water.
Orange and Blackberry White Wine Sangria recipe variations:
For the brandy/liqueur in this sangria, I used a combination of Cointreau and Crème de Mûre blackberry liqueur. I made homemade Crème de Mûre from a recipe by my friend Barb of Creative Culinary's recipe.
