This limoncello margarita takes the classic tequila cocktail and gives it an Italian twist.
I just happened to have some homemade limoncello in the back of the refrigerator, and because Tuesday is National Margarita Day, I thought I'd play around with it to make a margarita.
Limoncello is a delicious sweet lemony liqueur made by steeping lemon zest in grain alcohol (or vodka) for a few weeks, and then adding simple syrup to the mixture to dilute the alcohol and sweeten the concoction.
I keep the finished liqueur in the refrigerator or freezer, wherever I have enough room.
Of course, you don't have to make your own because there are many fabulous brands of limoncello, many from Italy, available.
Chilled limoncello is delicious sipped on its own. It's also wonderful poured over vanilla ice cream and mixed with gin or vodka for cocktails.
I've actually used in a mousse cake with delicious results.
I understand that the the limoncello margarita is actually served frozen at Disney's Epcot center in the Italian section. That sounds perfect for a summer day in Florida.
Ingredients for this margarita:
Tequila. I used blanco tequila, but reposado would work well too. Save the añejo for sipping.
Limoncello, of course.
Lemon juice and lime juice.
Cointreau or or triple sec.
Just a little bit of limeade concentrate to sweeten the drink.
Salt for the rim.
You can serve this margarita on the rocks or straight up in a chilled cocktail glass. You could even try blending it for a wonderful summer drink.
This turned out to be one of my favorite margaritas ever. It's so lemony and refreshing.

I love limoncello and would love this so much. We make our own, so I know this would be a delicious margarita.
ReplyDeleteIt's so fun making homemade isn't it?
DeleteI am out of homemade limoncello, but lemons are on the way from the CSA this week. Saving this idea for summer. (why is margarita day in February!?! haha!)
ReplyDeleteI know! It makes no sense, right?
DeleteI bought my husband limoncello and though he loves it it isn't getting used up. This sounds like a perfect solution!
