Severed Hand Pies

These severed hand pies are a fun and easy to make Halloween dessert. Fill them with a red-colored fruit (cherry, raspberry, strawberry, or cactus pear) pie filling for a creepy and delicious treat.

All you need to make these little severed hand pies is ready-made pie dough, cherry pie filling, and an egg wash. You can garnish the hand pies with some of the juices in your pie filling or with some raspberry or strawberry dessert topping. 

These were so fun to make and totally tasty.

You can easily scale this recipe to make as many hand pies as you need. These would be a great fill-in for a breakfast Pop Tart on Halloween morning! 

Ingredients:

Ready-made or homemade pie crust: I used refrigerated pre-rolled pie crust (such as Pillsbury). If you make your own pie crust dough, be sure to chill it before cutting. 

Pie Filling: You will need about 1/4 cup of pie filling per "hand." I used canned cherry pie filling, which I smashed and drained just enough so that I could fit it into the "fingers." You could also make your own filling by cooking some raspberries or cactus fruit with some sugar, and a bit of dissolved cornstarch until thickened and jammy. You could also use your favorite raspberry, cherry, or strawberry jam. 

Egg Wash: Whisk together an egg and a tablespoon of water. 

Optional Topping: I used a raspberry dessert topping that I received from Melissa's Produce to simulate some extra oozing out the pie.

To Make These Hand Pies: 

First, place your hand over some rolled out pie dough and trace around your fingers and wrist with a knife, adding about an extra 3/8 inch of dough for folding and sealing. Use that cutout hand as a pattern for cutting the rest of the dough. 

Alternatively, you can make a paper pattern from your hand and use that for cutting the dough. 

Next, place one of the dough "hands" on a parchment lined baking sheet and spoon about a 1/4 cup of the filling over the dough. Be sure to spread just a little over the fingers. 

After that, lay another cut out pie dough hand over the filling and crimp the edges together. Fold the edges under after crimping and brush the assembled hand pies with the egg wash. Use a thin knife to cut a few slits in the dough, including on the knuckles. 

Finally, bake the pies for about 20 minutes. Let them cool a bit before serving.

Cut the pie in half through the palm to serve. I also used some raspberry dessert topping to decorate the plate and the hand to emphasize the creepiness. Don't forget the bloody knife!

Note: Some of the filling might ooze out while baking. That's perfectly fine and adds to the effect you are looking for. 

Recipe Variations: 

You could also fill the pie dough with a savory ingredient, such as sloppy Joe filling or chili, taco meat, or even meatloaf and garnish with ketchup or a red hot sauce. 

You could also adapt this recipe to any holiday, such as using Santa shapes or stars for Christmas.

Severed Hand Pies

These severed hand pies are fun and easy to make for Halloween dessert. Fill them with red pie filling for a creepy and delicious treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 rolled out pie dough rounds (from one package if you use Pillsbury or other pre-made pie dough)
  • 1 cup cherry pie filling, crushed with a fork and slightly drained of the extra juices through a sieve
  • 1 egg whisked with one tablespoon of water
  • 1/4 cup raspberry dessert topping

Instructions

  1. Heat your oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. Place one of the raw pie crust rounds on a cutting board and trace your hand with a knife to cut out a hand shape, adding an extra 3/8 inch of dough. You can also do this on paper and use the paper as a pattern.
  3. Using the paper or the first cut dough as a pattern, cut three more hand cutouts.
  4. Place two of the cutouts on a parchment lined baking sheet and brush the edges with the egg wash.
  5. Spread the filling over the hand cutouts, leaving about 3/8 inches on the edges uncovered.
  6. Place another piece of the cutout dough over the filling and crimp the edges with a fork. Fold the crimped edges under to create smooth edges. Repeat with the second "hand."
  7. Brush each "hand" with the egg wash. Using a sharp paring knife, cut a few thin slits into the palm and the knuckles.
  8. Bake for about 20 minutes, until golden. Remove from the oven and let rest on the pan for 10 minutes.
  9. Cut in half and serve, adorned with extra "blood" from the strained cherries or raspberry\ dessert topping.
